Young Firefighters

Windermere Fire Station has run two Young Firefighter Schemes for young people between the ages of 13 and 16. The scheme provides a structured programme of activities focusing on life skills, team working and giving a sense of personal achievement. The programme consists of ten two-hour sessions, held at Windermere Fire Station once a week by operational retained firefighters.

This is attained by providing a programme of Fire & Rescue Service activities, involving teamwork, leadership, self-discipline and communication which all develop their individual confidence. It enables the pupils to develop health and safety awareness, acquire first-aid knowledge and increase their community safety awareness, all within a disciplined environment.

Funding for the Scheme has come from Area committees, South Lakes Federation, sponsorship support from Lakeland Limited, South Lakeland District CDRP and Windermere Safety Partnership.

The feedback from all the participants so far has been extremely positive, as they have all enjoyed the experience and taken away from the course a unique learning opportunity which will, hopefully, enhance their future prospects.

Lakes School pupils have taken part in both courses so far and the Scheme is also designed to forge strong links with the local schools and the Fire & Rescue Service.
