Lions link up with group in twin town

Members of Windermere Lions

2006 saw another very active year for the Windermere Twinning Association. Our twin town of Diessen in Bavaria takes great pride in being twinned with Windermere and all visitors from Windermere are treated to superb hospitality. The purpose of Twinning is to bring people together, and the groups of both towns embrace that.

September saw the 4th 'British' week in Diessen with many events marking the friendship of the two towns. This time the Windermere Lions were invited to attend, and to meet the newly established Lions group in the town. To mark the occasion the Diessen Lions gave the 'Lion' rose to the British group to bring back to Windermere. We look forward to seeing the bushes being planted and to another gift, the signpost to Diessen, being erected in time for the Lions return visit this April. After the ceremonies the group were escorted to the nearby city of Munich to experience the 'Octoberfest' festivities held there.

Also visiting British Week was a group of 'veteran' footballers consisting of various businessmen from Windermere and Bowness. The team fought valiantly only to be defeated 5-4 in the dying minutes. The team later took time off to enjoy the sights in Diessen (pictured opposite).

Pupils from both the Diessen 'Volkschule' (children's school) and our own Lakes school visited one another last year, which was described by some of the pupils during an enjoyable presentation at the Burnside Hotel.

The association welcomes you to take part in the twinning and the benefits that it brings to the people of Windermere and Bowness, remember that it is your twin town and it has much to offer you - but you have to be 'in it to get it'!
