Stop Press - THAT Exhibition

The June 14 Marchesi Centre exhibition of the County Council's proposals for Crescent Road and the A591 generated a big turnout of local people keen to see the detail of what is proposed, talk to the engineers and voice their many and varied opinions.

Local MP Tim Farron was there. Tim said: "Everyone involved in the new traffic system, from the county council to residents and traders, wants a solution that works the best for Windermere. Of course, not everyone agrees what that solution is!

"Personally, I am convinced that we need to look again at the possibility of a roundabout at the station junction. While it will be difficult from an engineering perspective, we shouldn't let that defeat us in the search for the best possible solution." Local County Councillor Joan Stocker responded: "I agree wholeheartedly with Tim that everyone wants the best solution. The possibility of installing a roundabout has been looked at again and again. With up-to-date figures on traffic levels, a roundabout will not be able to cope with traffic volumes in five years. Over-capacity roundabouts elsewhere in the country are sorted out by installing traffic lights on them. So a roundabout now could become a roundabout with traffic lights in five years time!

"It would make life much easier for me to support the installation of a roundabout, but I cannot propose a solution that I firmly believe would not work.

"County Councillors will be listening to all comments and will then make the best decision for the future well-being of Windermere."
